This Saturday Nov.8th! Craft Raffle!

Here's your chance to show your talent! The 2008 FOSSILS Craft Raffle!
The traditional craft raffle for the November FOSSILS meeting will have 'only' items made by members. The items can be anything, like homebrew, homemade wine, cider, (even a little shine if you got it). The items do not have to be beer or homebrew related. Home canned jams or jellies, anything you have made yourself and want to enter will be fine. The goal is to see what kind of talent and creativity the members have, and to raise money for the FOSSILS activities the coming year. I'll be bringing a couple bags of my homeroasted coffee to raffle. Please put your names on the items you bring and add a little note if you feel a description is necessary.
Let's have some fun with this and cheer on the lucky people who walk away with the handmade items representing the talents of our club!
The meeting is November 8th starting at 6:30pm in the Prost Room of NABC Brewing.

October Meeting Change!

The October meeting is being moved to October 18th to coincide with
the Brew-in at Riley Ridge. Why, you may ask? Because also on that
day are two notable events (NABC Fringe Fest and Harvest Homecoming)
that would likely compromise attendance for a very important meeting
planned for election of club officers. Club by-laws dictate that
elections must take place in October, so this seemed to be the best
solution. To complicate things further, Prost would not be available
for a meeting on the 18th, so it made sense to move the meeting to a
place where quite a few FOSSILS will likely be…The Riley Ridge
Brew-in.

This also means that the Craft Raffle, scheduled for the October
meeting will be postponed and a new date will be announced soon.

On election day at Riley Ridge, ballot collection will begin at 1:00pm
and end promptly at 5:00pm when votes will be tabulated.

Sample Ballot:

President: (vote for one)

(Wednesday the 15th, Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th). One (or
more) designated FOSSILS members will be at the pub to assure the
ballots are available to dues-paying members between the hours of
6:30pm to 9:30pm each of the three days.

Subject: What is Brew Day at Riley Ridge?

This is a chance to let the public know about Fossil's, increase
membership, and brewing interest. Becky will provide 1 to 2 bags of 2
row. I will try to get a bag donated. I am requesting you to bring
your equipment out to the farm at 10am to set up on October 18th.You
will brew outside the barn so come down the gravel drive and park in
field. I will need to know if you need a specific Wyeast for your brew
,and a list of other items ahead of time. I will pull all your items
and box them up so they will be ready for you. There is a grain mill
on site for the 2 row and other grains. Feel free to fax me your
recipe. John will teach a Beer kit class also starting at 10 am to 12.
There will be plenty of snacks and food for the brewers.

Let your friends know and invite them for a fun day of brewing and fellowship.

Hope to see you here,
Becky Riley

IRON MASH 2008

Sunday, October 12, 9:30am, BBC Taproom

Most everyone has heard of The Food Network's Iron Chef, where there
is face-off between celebrity cooks who are given unlikely ingredients
from which to craft impressive dishes. The "Iron Mash" is a similar
contest in which home brewers design and brew ales or lagers with a
set of mystery ingredients disclosed to them right before the contest
begins. The Lagers (Louisville) and Bocks (Lexington) have
participated in several Iron Mash Contests over the past few years and
this year are extending the invitation to FOSSIL members to join the
fun.

The challenge will be held at the BBC Tap Room October 12, 2008
starting around 9:30 AM until ??. Each brewer/team will be given a
packet of base malt, specialty grains, hops and adjunct flavorings. In
past years, the flavorings have included Belgian sugar, hot cocoa mix,
bitter orange, coriander and other spices, with a wide variety of
malted grains. Each team will have about 30 minutes to create a recipe
incorporating at least one of the adjunct flavorings, declare a beer
style (e.g. as in porter, dry stout or American pale ale, etc.)
then, brew the libation, using all your brew master/mistress skills on
the spot.

After a couple of months, a six pack of your fabulous brew will be
sent to the BOCKS for judging against the style declared at the 'Iron
Mash' with a meeting of all clubs, where Iron Mash Winners are
announced at a TBD date and place in early 2008.

Bring a snack or other food items and any homebrews you'd like to
showcase amongst your fellow brewers. Brew Days always work up a
hearty appetite and thirst!

Please contact Barb Cotton if you plan to participate!

bcottonehs_sentinel@yahoo.com

Barbara.Cotton@hexion.com

Looking forward to seeing you Oct. 12, 2008, at the BBC Tap Room.

Best use of local food~ Scott Boyer- Wraps

4th Place~ Joe Bray- several types of yummy ice cream

3rd Place~ Barb Cotton- Beer Misu

2nd Place~ Jim and Debbie Frazier- Grilled, beer-basted Watermelon

1st Place~ Caleb Sunderman- Puff pastries

Congratulations to all !

Food for thought…

If you had purchased $1,000.00 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago
you would have $49.00 left.

With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1,000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank
all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling
REFUND, you would have $214.00 cash.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink
heavily and recycle.

It's called the 401-Keg!

***

A recent study found the average American walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found Americans drink, on the average, 22 gallons of
alcohol a year.

That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

2008 Annual Womens Brew-in (April 5-6)

Hello Ladies,

Guess what time of the year it is...that's right! It's time for the annual All Girl Brew-In and Slumber Party but without the Brewing.

This is the last year Eileen Dudley will be hosting the GBI at her home. She and Mike will moving to New Albany very soon and our 'clubhouse' for this one time a year event will be no more. We've been fortunate enough, for oh so many years now ( a little help, how many???), to have this unique event that brought together woman for laughter, beer, brewing, food, fun and an old fashion spend the night together (hats off to Jane K. who was kind and brave enough to play host at her home that one year when Eileen couldn't).

Since we're not going to have a full on brew day then there is really no need to haul our cookies out of bed quite so early. The official start time will be 3 pm.

In the spirit of our ongoing camaraderie and sharing we will be making Stone(d) Soup for dinner. Taking our cue from the popular children's book we are asking that everyone bring something to throw in the "pot" such as any vegetable (or bean, but please make sure if you bring dried beans they have already been soaked). Those of you who grow fresh herbs are asked to bring that along as well.
Sarah Ring and myself will be preparing two different stocks, one beef and one chicken. We'll add the stone at the party. The rest of you woman are responsible for the yummies. Since we don't want to dirty up Miss Eileen's kitchen we will be preparing our meal outside on a couple of Cajun cookers.
Please bring along some appetizer type foods for afternoon snacking (and into the night) as long as it doesn't necessitate using the oven or anything else that will mess up the house. They're trying to pack up and move remember. We should have fridge space in the garage. Club exec's will need to make sure we have paper/plastic silverware, plates, bowls and cups. Everyone should bring their own glass to drink beer.

So that we can technically call it a club function we will still be holding a raffle to raise moneys for the clubs, or at least cover our expenses for beer, so bring stuff that woman like and plenty of money for tickets. I'm sure we'll get a keg or two (or three) of beer to drink, but as always too much is never enough. Bring along some beer to share and maybe some vodka for the morning.

Our craft project this year will involve making mosaics so if you have any broken dishes or just ones you wish were, bring those along and we'll turn something ugly into someything pretty. Eileen says that people can mosaic on picture frames, trays, tiles - anything flat which you should bring along with you. She says we could even make stepping stones, but we will need to know in advance because it requires other stuff (like an old 8 x 8 baking pan that will not be cooked in again).

At our first brew-in we didn't have an official Raoul. Mike just sort of stepped up to the plate by bringing us beer and lighting our smokes while we were outside in the hot tub. Remember when the hot tub was outside? Thus began the tradition of asking one man to join us for the express purpose of serving us. We won't be employing a man this year, but maybe if Mike isn't out of town he will make a special appearance for old times sake.

The same rules apply as in years gone by as far as being safe. Plan on spending the night if you've been drinking. Period. It's just better for everyone that way. In the morning we'll have a breakfast casserole and coffee and BLOODY MARY'S, I'm sure.

This may or may not be my final letter on this year's party depending on updates or new information available. For all practical purposes, consider this your final warning...I mean letter.

The date is Saturday- Sunday, April 5th-6th and I hope to see all you beautiful, wonderful, funny and smart (ass) bitches there! See below for a check list you can print out and directions.
Love Always,
AMY

PS
Anyone who has a picture(s) of us that you think really epitomizes the GBI please get me a copy of them within the next few weeks.

Take I-64 west to the Greenville/Paoli exit (Hwy 150)

Head West on 150 past Highlander Point and Mt. St. Francis, the road will change to one lane.

You will enter Galena. You will come to a blinking light and a closed down Sav-A-Step on your left, maybe. I have no idea if it's even still there! The first right after the blinking light is FIRST CROSS STREET- there is a sign for the church at the corner.

Turn right onto First Cross St. The road appears to end but really becomes the Dudley’s gravel driveway.

(This is for the 2 of you that do this every year: When you realize that you are almost to Mor or Christine's, get back on 64 and head east one exit.) Do you still do that after all these years?!?
